How do you turn silver colored costume jewelry into gold colored jewelry?

Tom. D asked:

I have a few items (costume jewelry) that are silver but I would like to turn them into a gold color. What type of product would I use to do this? Would metal spray paint work or would it chip off very easy? I also have a few items that are a gold color and the gold is comming off. I would like to recolor these items to make them look new. Please tell me the process.

You can have them plated at a jeweller or alternatively, visit a supply store and they should have gold plating. Just follow the instructions, but generally you dip the piece in the gold plate and let it sit for x amount of time, before you remove it. I have personally never tried it but I heard it works although the results are not as professional as they would be if you got it done by a jeweler. You can also purchase cheaper karat gold for your plating, and that way it won’t cost a fortune. Simply find a jewellery supply store in your area and give them a call. They should be able to direct you to the product in question.
    Best of luck! Ms Pearl

Painting your jewelry is not actually a great solution. The paint will chip and wear extremely easily and the color will look very “fake”. You can have it plated, but being costume jewelry, you may not want to go to that expense–it would most likely cost more than the jewelry is worth, and plating wears and chips fairly easily over time as well. Your best bet is to leave it silver and buy new gold colored peices. sterling_girl
